How Saplings Become Towering Oaks

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
James 1:2-4

In 1991, a massive biology experiment known as Biosphere 2 opened in Arizona. The size of two and a half football fields, it’s primary purpose was to research the Earth’s ecosystems. From 1991 to 1993, the first “mission” ran, with the structure completely sealed off. At the end of the period, they learned a lot – but one of the most striking discoveries related to the growth of trees.  They found that in both the rainforest area and on the savannah, trees ended up stunted and weak. The scientists discovered that it’s impossible to get towering oaks if the tree never has to endure wind or freezing cold.

This is precisely what James is saying: God wants you to be a towering oak, not a stunted sapling. This is why He allows you to endure trials: because without them, you’ll never become all that He created you to be.

Think about the last trial you endured. How did you handle it? With that trial in the rearview mirror, how has enduring it served to bring you closer to Christ and make you more godly?

Read Romans 5:1-5, where Paul echoes James’ words. In the midst of trials and suffering, how do we get through it?
